The Big Idea Competition: A Success Story

Campus Promotions works year-round with Entrepreneurship@Cornell, a department at Cornell devoted to undergraduate business and entrepreneurship. Every year, E@C holds a campus-wide contest available to all students from all majors and colleges, called The Big Idea Competition.

Students are asked to submit an idea as the basis of a business plan. Ideas are then submitted to a panel of judges, and the winning ideas receive cash prizes of up to $2,500. Campus Promotions handles the all marketing for the competition.

Working with The Big Idea Competition

Campus Promotions performed market research and analaysis before beginning any official marketing work. After this analysis was finished, CP proposed a strategic method of entry based on the survey results and analysis of data.

In developing the marketing plan for The Big Idea Competition, CP created a mascot, Bolt, which became the iconic image of the competition. Flyers with the familiar phrase "Where's Bolt?", as can be seen to the right, were distributed all around campus. Bolt became so recognizable that students would constantly scream his name when he was on campus.

CP also raised awareness about the competition with strategic postering, chalking and quartercarding. More information about these individual services is available on our Distributions page.

As a result of the work CP did, participation in the competition increased by 40%!
